Newcastle Falcons lock Nick Civetta hoping Aviva Premiership visit will help rugby take off in United States
Newcastle Falcons lock Nick Civetta wants next week’s Philadelphia showpiece against Saracens to provide a springboard for investment in US rugby.
The 27-year-old American, who trained as an earthquake engineer in New York, has urged the financiers to take note of the Aviva Premiership fixture.
'They say it’s the fastest growing team sport in the US and I think that’s starting to show,’ said Civetta. ‘We’re just waiting for some big money to be pumped in to the game and take it to the professional level.'
He added: ‘I think the Premiership coming to the US is great to build the American fan base. We’re sport mad in the US with football, basketball, baseball and hockey but now we’ve got soccer as well.
‘It’s a packed market for sports but I think there’s room for a professional rugby competition in America. We have to prove there’s enough interest to drive sponsorship and these are the sort of occasions to do that.’
The game will be staged at the Talen Energy Stadium.
It is the second Premiership fixture to be staged in the States, with Saracens’ American winger Chris Wyles hoping the week-long getaway will be beneficial to the club's title charge.
‘It’s another example of freshening things up in the season, and giving it a bit of variety,’ said Wyles. ‘To be able to expose top-level rugby to America is fantastic and is only going to help broaden the game and bring it to new audiences.’
